Why These Topics Matter
Two of these sessions go to the hardest technical questions in marital property practice. Jocelyn P. v. Joshua P. addressed how Maryland courts approach the disposition of cryopreserved embryos when a marriage ends — a question that did not exist a generation ago and that few statutes anticipate. Tracing marital and nonmarital property is older ground but no less demanding: when separate funds have been commingled, refinanced, or reinvested across decades, establishing the source of funds is often the difference between a fair award and an arbitrary one.
The third session addressed something practitioners discuss less often. Family law puts attorneys in sustained contact with people in acute distress, and the cumulative weight of that work is real. A profession willing to program around it is a healthier one.
